Netflix is officially cracking down on password sharing in the UK.

The streaming giant has kicked off its long-awaited password controls in 103 major markets including the UK, US, Australia, France, Germany and Mexico.

Netflix has started telling UK customers that they’ll have to pay £4.99 a month if they want to share their account with someone outside of their home, known as buying an extra profile, or they can transfer a profile to a new membership.

The email sent out to users states: “Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with - your household.

“You can easily watch Netflix on the go and when you travel - either on your personal devices or a TV at a hotel or holiday home.”

It’s not yet known how Netflix will crack down on those who do share out their passwords and accounts, but they have previously spoken about tracking account activity via IP addresses and device IDs, which could be used to show an account in two different places.

The new password sharing rules have already come into effect in places like Spain, but according to Kantar, Netflix has lost more than a million subscribers in the first three months following the rules.  However, Netflix themselves have suggested Canadian accounts have continued to grow under the new rules.

The BBC also reported that the streaming service promised investors cancellations won’t hamper growth as “longer term, paid sharing will ensure a bigger revenue base from which we can grow as we improve our service.”

Netflix announced the plans back in January, writing at the time: “Today’s widespread account sharing (100M+ homes) jeopardises our capacity to develop our company and invest in Netflix in the long run. Even though our terms of service only permit one family to use Netflix at a time, we acknowledge that some members may find this to be a change.

"Therefore, we’ve put a lot of effort into developing new features that enhance the Netflix experience, such as the capability for subscribers to see which devices are using their accounts and transfer a profile to a new account. Members will have the choice to pay more to share Netflix with people they don’t live within various countries as we roll out paid sharing."
