As we approach the end of Succession, and with all of us wondering exactly how the narrative will conclude, eagle-eyed fans think they’ve spotted a clue in the penultimate episode.

Next Monday (29th May), the finale will bring an end to the dark comedy-drama after four seasons. Will the Waystar Royco deal with GoJo go through? Or will Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and/or Roman (Kieran Culkin) scupper it? And if the deal does happen, will Shiv (Sarah Snook) be appointed as the US CEO?

Well, regarding the latter, a scene in this week’s episode has caused fans to think that Shiv might not get the nod from Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), should the deal go through.

The show’s penultimate episode saw (spoiler alert) the funeral of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) take place, and the siblings all attempt to position themselves the good books of pending new US president Jeryd Mencken (Justin Kirk). Should his presidency be confirmed, he will have the final say on whether the deal goes through or not.

Having previously suggested to Roman that he would block the deal, the potential new president seems to be reconsidering his position following the funeral, where Roman got very emotional.

After Matsson and Shiv meet Mencken and suggest the idea of a US CEO to help encourage him to approve the deal, the tech billionaire calls Shiv from the backseat of his car, and tells her that the future POTUS had approved the idea.

He says: “I think I can make a US CEO work.”

However, and here’s the thing, Matsson’s wording specifically doesn’t refer to Shiv being the new CEO. And viewers noticed that Matsson seems to be looking at a character off-screen. Perhaps he was just in the car with Mencken, but could he have actually been sitting with the person he is potentially going to make the CEO? And if so, who is it?

Tom (Matthew Macfadyen)? Maybe not, as he was literally just talking to Shiv moments before the phone call. What about Stewy (Arian Moayed), Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) or Sandi (Hope Davis)? Maybe, or could it be… Greg (Nicholas Braun)?

Some fans on Twitter seem to think that, amazingly, Greg might be in line to rise to the top. One wrote: “Matsson is absolutely looking at somebody in that car when he's talking to Shiv about you-know-what (keeping it spoiler-free) – and I reckon it's Greg. #Succession"

Another said: “What if #Succession is actually just a show about the rise and rise of Greg? He’s gone from a nobody in management training in season 1 to meeting the president and carrying Logan’s coffin in the penultimate episode. I’m calling it now: Matsson makes him US CEO over Shiv. 👀”

With the finale just around the corner, Kieran Culkin has revealed that there were 'three different ideas' for a fifth season.

The final episode of Succession will air on Monday 29th May on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
