The Banshees of Inisherin star Barry Keoghan is bowing out of the Gladiator sequel Emperor Geta and being replaced by The White Lotus star Fred Hechinger.

According to Deadline, the actor was due to star in the follow-up to the Y2k epic which starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, but it now being replaced due to 'scheduling conflicts'.

Barry had to forgo the role in the new Sir Ridley Scott directed and produced film due to filming commitments for American Honey filmmaker Andrea Arnold's upcoming movie, Bird, reports Above the Line.

The Gladiator sequel also stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Maximus’ lover Lucilla and the nephew of Commodus, plus Derek Jacobi as Gracchus and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla alongside Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington and Joseph Quinn.

Moon Knight’s May Calamawy, GBBO's Matt Lucas, Lior Raz and Peter Mensah have also been cast in the long-awaited film penned by David Scarpa.

An insider previously told The Sun: "This has been building since 2018 and for a long time it looked like it may never see the light of day.

"But suddenly late last year the production team really sprung into life after settling on a new script which seemed to inspire them."

They added: "A few months later everything was up and running and now it’s well underway.

"They should be filming by May, which means there’s every chance the movie will be ready sometime in 2024. Either way, this would be a huge box office draw."

The blockbuster is set to start filming in Morocco this month.
