Silo: Writer wants to tell 'whole story' over four seasons

Silo is the latest dystopian thriller series to hit Apple TV+ and writer Hugh Howey already has his sights more seasons.

Based on Howey’s best-selling trilogy, Silo is set in a near post-apocalyptic future where men and women live in a giant silo underground. The people believe they are living there to protect them from the toxic and ruined world on the surface, but there are some beginning to question this theory- including engineer Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson).

It is already receiving rave reviews from critics and fans alike and writer Howey wants to take it further.

Speaking to virginradio.co.uk and other press at a special screening of the series, he said: “This is already beyond anything I dreamed. But if I’m going to be greedy, I would love to tell the whole story, which we’d have to do over probably four seasons or so.

“So I just hope people tune in and we get enough support.”

Science fiction and dystopian stories seem to be getting a lot of attention these days, with the likes The Last of Us and Howey believes there is an appetite for it right now.

He explained: “I think it shows the intelligence of audiences these days. My favourite books growing up were things like 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 45, Handmaid’s Tale. You don’t just read this to be entertained. Beyond the entertainment, you have to really think about your place in history and where the future is heading. The world just gets smarter and smarter and people today want these conversations.”

Joining Ferguson on the cast is Shawshank Redemption star Tim Robbins, who plays the head of IT in the Silo, Bernard.

He also believes there is a lot of be learned from science fiction series like Silo and added: “I think when they're done well, they can serve as a warning, an allegory for choices that we have coming up and whether we should make them or not, and what we should decide our future is and how we should imagine that.”

Silo is now available to stream on Apple TV+.
