The BBC film will give a new insight into the life of The King, told in his own words.

The coronation is fast approaching, and to mark the occasion, the BBC has made a special documentary which celebrates the life of King Charles III.

The film, titled Charles R: The Making of a Monarch, will be on BBC One this Sunday, and gives viewers the opportunity to see rare and unseen footage of The King from the last few decades.

Buckingham Palace granted the BBC exclusive access to never before seen footage from the 1969 documentary Royal Family, including a private visit to Malta, and a trip to the Royal Mint alongside Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

There will also be clips from the Royal Family’s private home movie footage, capturing The Prince’s early love of nature, gardening and animals in his formative years.

The documentary is told through the words of The King, with recordings through the decades featuring him talking about his memories of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, his military service and his previous role as Prince of Wales.

Claire Popplewell, Creative Director for BBC Studios Events Productions, said: “This documentary brings audiences a treasure trove of scenes filmed across seven decades in the life of The King.

“Unique and unseen moments with contemporary archive sources and the spoken words of His Majesty, Charles R: The Making of a Monarch tells the story of how a Prince became a King.”

The coronation itself will take place on Saturday 6th May at Westminster Abbey where The King will be crowned alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort.

This will be followed by a special concert on Sunday 7th May in the grounds of Windsor Castle, with confirmed acts including Take That, Lionel Ritchie and Katy Perry.

On Monday 1st May, there will even be a special episode of Eastenders, where the residents of Albert Square throw a party to celebrate the royal event.

Charles R: The Making of a Monarch will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 30th April at 8pm.
