Nicolas Cage has been in many cracking films in an illustrious career, but he has now spoken out about some of his less acclaimed roles, and the reason he took them on.

The star actor won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas in 1995, and was an action hero over the following couple of years, with romps such as The Rock and Face/Off. Last year he was in critically-acclaimed The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent with Pedro Pascal. However, the actor has also, by his own admission, been in some projects that were “crummy.”

Speaking about why he took on so many roles, he explained that he needed the work to pay off his debt. “I was over-invested in real estate. The real estate market crashed, and I couldn’t get out in time,” he said.

Speaking to 60 Minutes, the Renfield star continued: “I paid them all back, but it was about $6 million. I never filed for bankruptcy.”

Describing the work as his “guardian angel,” Cage said that the time was “dark, sure,” but said that he always gave his all. “Even if the movie ultimately is crummy, they know I’m not phoning it in, that I care every time,” he said.

Last year, Cage spoke to GQ about some of the straight-to-video movies he did at this time. “When I was doing four movies a year, back to back to back, I still had to find something in them to be able to give it my all,” he said.

“They didn’t work, all of them. Some of them were terrific, like Mandy, but some of them didn’t work. But I never phoned it in. So if there was a misconception, it was that. That I was just doing it and not caring. I was caring.”
