With series one of police drama Blue Lights winning praise from critics and fans, the BBC has announced that it is coming back for a second series.

Fans of the show have been calling for it to be renewed for a while, so they will be excited to learn that it is returning for another six episodes.

Created and written by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, Blue Lights follows probationary recruits Grace (Siân Brooke), Annie (Katherine Devlin), and Tommy (Nathan Braniff) who, as part of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), have been thrown in at the deep end of a divided community in Belfast.

Brooke, Devlin and Braniff are all set to reprise their roles in series two. Other cast members announced to come back for new episodes so far include Joanne Crawford, Andi Osho, and Hannah McClean. Further casting is set to be announced in due course.

With filming on series two beginning this summer in Belfast, co-writer Lawn took to Twitter to say that the show will be back next year. He wrote: “Blue Lights has been recommissioned for a second series. Thanks to everyone who watched it and for all the incredible support for the show. We’ll be back on @BBCOne in 2024. Until then - take a beat! 😀 #bluelights”

Lindsay Salt, Director of Drama BBC, said in a statement: “Blue Lights has been a breakout hit and so many of our viewers have taken the rookies to their hearts which is down to the fantastic cast and Declan and Adam’s vision. We can’t wait to have it back on BBC One and iPlayer for a second series.”

Stephen Wright, Executive Producer of Blue Lights and Creative Director and Joint CEO of Two Cities TV says: “We are thrilled by the audience response to the show. Belfast is a vibrant, dynamic and complex place and we have a wealth of stories yet to come from our characters. We can’t wait to bring these to the fans.”

Watch Blue Lights on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
